The O.C.’s Rachel Bilson returns to her first regular television role on The CW’s Hart of Dixie this fall. On the medical drama, Bilson plays Dr. Zoe Hart, a down on her luck New York City doctor who loses both her job and her boyfriend. She then finds a new home and a new job in Alabama. “Is there a show on my shoulders? It’s getting heavy,” Bilson jokes about playing the series’ titular character with reporters at Thursday’s Television Critics Association (TCA) on Thursday. “I think there are so many different relationships going on,” she then explains. “And the characters are awesome. I’m so lucky to have everyone that I do. I don’t feel any pressure, because I really feel like it’s a group effort and everyone is so fantastic. I realize it is Hart of Dixie and Zoe Hart, it is her last name. But it is a group effort, and it really is a family. So there’s no pressure.” The series also stars Friday Night Lights’ Scott Porter and My Generation’s Jaime King. It reunites Bilson with O.C. exec producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (also of Gossip Girl). Bilson says she was always open to returning to television, but she always felt that when she did come back it would include Schwartz and Savage. She said meeting the rest of the producing team and the pilot’s strong writing sealed the deal for her. “Everything felt right. You know when you just know,” the actress says. Hart of Dixie premieres Monday, Sept. 26 on The CW. |

Hart of Dixie marks the return of Rachel Bilson to television. You know her as Summer on the FOX hit, The O.C. This time, she’s heading over the the CW, but not without bringing some of her O.C. family along, like Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz who created/produced The O.C. and the CW’s current hit, Gossip Girl. Here’s what I learned at today’s Television Critics Association (TCA) panel, which included Scott Porter (Friday Night Lights), Rachel Bilson (The O.C.), Jaime King (Gary Unmarried), and Leila Gerstein and Len Goldstein, the executive producers of the series. 1. The basic premise of the show: Rachel Bilson (Zoe Hart) comes from New York City and is a fish out of water in Bluebell, Alabama where she starts a small medical practice. Scott Porter (George) is originally from Bluebell and engaged to Lemon (Jaime King), who happens to be the perfect southern belle. George used to practice law in New York and is intrigued by Zoe Hart, the new girl in town. 2. Showrunner Pam Veasey discussed how she formed Bluebell, Alabama: “I created a town I wanted to move to since I knew I’d be writing about it all the time. It was created out an escapist need I have.” Don’t worry, Southerners, the panel all discussed the South with reverence, and two of the four writers of the series are from the South. Don’t expect any “very special” episodes addressing racism in the deep South. This show wants to keep it light. 3. Rachel Bilson’s favorite costar? An alligator named “Burt Reynolds.” 4. The series would like to use country music much like Gossip Girl and The O.C. did, as a major character. 5. Bilson knew she always wanted to work with Schwartz and Savage again. 6. The show only has five series regulars, so expect some new characters coming in. The series creator, Leila Gerstein explained, “We want to see who pops.” 7. You may not have guessed this, but Scott Porter comes from a more comedy and musical theater background. He discussed how audiences need the kind of lightness that Hart of Dixie offers. 8. When asked about southern manners, Jaime King said “The most important manner is general kindness.” Hart of Dixie premieres Monday, September 26 at 9pm on the CW. |

In the issue, the 29-year-old (she turns 30 on the 25th!) shares some secrets about her fashion philosophy. “I know this sounds terribly shallow, but I’ve been mapping out my outfits for the next day every day since I was little, even before high school,” Bilson says. “I have a very busy mind—there’s constant chitter-chatter up there—but what I’m wearing the next day? That’s definitely something that’s always been in my head before I go to sleep at night.” Soon, we’ll be seeing lots more of Bilson (and her amazing style) as she returns to television this fall with a new lighthearted drama, Hart of Dixie. “I get to be tough and sassy and sarcastic—all that good stuff,” Bilson says of playing surgeon Dr. Zoe Hart on the show. “And I deliver a baby!” For more of our exclusive interview with Rachel Bilson, pick up the new InStyle Makeover issue, on newsstands Friday August 5th. |
