Rachel Bilson Talks Fashion and Paparazzi
Written by Jennifer on May 18, 2011

Rachel Bilson is one of the most sweet and stylish stars in Hollywood, so who better to star in Magnum Ice Cream’s shorts series directed by designer Karl Lagerfeld? We snagged some time with Rachel to chat about this very cool job, how the paparazzi’s helped her fashion-wise and more.

On Karl as a director:
“He was fantastic. He was very nice. But he also had a really good vision, which I guess goes without saying [because] he’s an amazing designer. But he was a great director, really hands on, and I felt very comfortable, and I thought he did a great job.”

On what surprised her most about him:
“Just how nice and approachable he was because he’s such an icon, you never know what to expect. He was just fantastic and warm.”

On the perks on the shoot:
“I ate a lot of ice cream; it was an enjoyable experience. I like the Magnum Almond. There may have been a [Chanel] present involved, which is always very exciting. I’m very grateful to receive that. You know, one of the nicest perks.”

On her favorite souvenir from set:
“Karl was writing some information down on a Chanel pad of his, and after he was done he asked me, “Do you want this?” and I took it so fast, like a kid in a candy shop, it was so funny. He was like laughing, he was like, “Oh, I didn’t realize you wanted it so bad.” I got an original notepad from Karl, which was very exciting.”

On spring styles she’s loving:
“I think color is really great, and all the colored denim is really fun. I’m like in to all the vibrant colors and stuff. I think I’m really pumped for spring.”

On what inspires her personal style:
“I get inspired by just people, just like anyone you see on the street or whatever. Like, I can get inspiration anywhere. I like looking at old books, pictures of people, or blogs. I like blogs like the Sartorialist. I think it’s fun to look at fashion blogs. WhoWhatWear is really great too.”

On how she chooses her outfits:
“It’s very important to be comfortable — that’s always first. I hate not being comfortable; often I’ll take off my shoes and be barefoot for a while. I think it’s important to wear what makes you happy, not put too much thought into it. … I just wear what I like, and you can’t really pay attention to criticism, it’s not healthy.”

On how the paparazzi have helped her style:
“It’s so weird to be in a business where you’re photographed; you notice things that you normally wouldn’t. Like, I know nude shoes really help my child-size legs. You know, it helps in that area, so you learn little things like that.”

On her new home line, Edie Rose Home:
“I love home stuff. I love kitchenware, I love bedding, I love everything like that. So I was on an endless search for dishes and finding something that I wanted, and I just couldn’t find it out there for the price I wanted. So I was like, ‘Maybe I could try to design dishes’ because I know what I want and what I like and I can’t find it. I wanted to design dishes for anyone, whether it was someone getting their first apartment or getting married or just wanting to change it up, and to be affordable.”

On whether she’ll continue to do fashion design:
“I don’t know. I’m not sure about that. I’m really enjoying doing the home line right now. I think it’s so much fun and obviously designing clothes would be amazing. I wanna just focus on home stuff for now, it’s just so much fun. You can really branch out in a lot of areas with it, so it’s cool.”

On her favorite fashion designers:
“Chanel is always good. Anything Chanel, I’m happy. I love The Row and I think that it’s awesome and they do such a great job. And like Rag & Bone, and Alexander Wang. Oh my goodness, there’s so many amazing designers that I just feel lucky that I get to wear them.”

On her upcoming show “Hart of Dixie”:
“It’s about a doctor from New York City, and she’s a really great doctor, and she gets relocated to a small southern town and meets a bunch of interesting characters there, and of course is hated by all upon arrival. It’s like one of those fish-out-of-water stories. It’s really fun though and has a lot of heart. Ha, no pun intended!”

On researching for the role:
“I did have to do some research before I went, and it was the gnarliest thing I’ve ever witnessed in my life. I’m really happy I chose the profession that I did. It was insane! I watched crazy plastic surgery. And by the way, not that I ever wanted plastic surgery, but I would never, ever get a boob job. It was soooo gnarly! I can’t even tell you the smell. I can’t even talk about it, it was so gross.”

On doing comedies:
“I love comedy. I would love to [do more of it]; it’s definitely my number one favorite thing to do, so it would be so much fun. I love Tina Fey, but my all time favorite actress person in the world is Lucille Ball, so that’s definitely my inspiration.”
